On Safari - Africa 2008

We started our African adventure in Cape town, a colourful waterfront city nestled in the shadow of Table Mountain.

Highlights were the open air markets, the wonderful local cuisine and of course a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain where we enjoyed breathtaking views of the city. We then headed to the wine lands areas of Franschoek and Stellenbosch established by the French Huguenots in the early 1820’s.

The wines and culinary delights of this area have to be tasted to be believed, we realised we were not going to lose weight on this trip.

Then the real adventure began at Honeyguide Safari Lodge in Kruger National Park. This private lodge has luxury tented accommodation with ensuites and was amazing. We were woken by African drums each morning and then served tea and coffee in bed before heading out for our first game drive of the day.

Seeing your first giraffes, elephants, lions and all the amazing wildlife for the first time in the wild is something you always remember. Between game drives we were pampered with the finest of foods and a well stocked bar ensured we were never thirsty. The sunset drives and visiting the local village and meeting the kids at school were also highlights of Kruger.

Our next stop was the famous Victoria Falls Hotel. Established in 1904 the hotel has hosted members of Royal families, international and local statesmen, celebrities and now us. The Falls are bigger and more spectacular than you can imagine and the “Flight of the Angels” helicopter ride over them was awesome. Another highlight was our 1880’s fully restored private steam train ride to Victoria Falls Bridge where we parked and enjoyed G & T’s as sunset fell over the Falls.

We crossed the border into Botswana and stayed at Kubu Lodge, a lush paradise on the banks of the Chobe River. Here we stayed in comfortable thatched chalets on stilts overlooking a shaded lawn spread beneath giant ebony and wild fig trees to the river's edge. On our game drives and cruises we encountered literally hundreds of Elephants that come to the river in the afternoon to drink and play. We also tried our hand at Tiger fishing. These fish are relatives to the Piranha and fight like tigers. One of the highlights was a visit by the local pre school children who sang to us over lunch. None of us had a dry eye after this moving moment.

In summary the people, the colours and the animals of Africa moved all of us and left us with memories of a proud people living in harmony in a land of contrasts that can be both savage and beautiful.
